If you come upon any type of police car or emergency vehicle pulled over on the roadside with emergency lights flashing, don’t forget Oregon’s Move Over Law. Drivers must:
- Move over into another lane.
- If you can’t safely change lanes, slow down.
- In all cases, the driver must try to provide as much room as possible for the emergency vehicle.
The Move Over Law is designed to help protect law enforcement officers and emergency responders from speeding and inattentive drivers. The penalty is a Class B violation with fines up to $355. The law became effective in 2004 with aggressive enforcement starting a year later after a public education campaign.
